Himlingeskogen

Himlingeskogen is a remote old-growth forest reached after a few kilometers walk from Himlinge village. The forest offers a rich experience for those interested in mushrooms, mosses and lichens, especially in autumn when the colors explode. It is characterized by a natural aging process without modern forestry, resulting in many dead trees that are important for lichens, fungi, insects and birds. The diversity of the forest is high, with upland stony soils and wet bogs and fens, creating habitats for a variety of species, including uncommon ones such as the crystalline tick, cat-footed lichen and the cattle-leg.

In the southern part of the reserve there are marshes and swampy forests where cranberries, missne, tuvull and skvattram grow. The nutrient-poor environments mean that the trees grow slowly, with pine trees that can be over 100 years old despite being slender. Himlingeskogen is also home to many birds, especially woodpeckers and tits, which thrive in the old forest with its diversity of tree species and abundant dead wood.
