Description
On the north side of the Stångån river, next to the highway, is a deer enclosure that was built as early as 1660, but then much larger. It was common for larger estates to have their own animal farm, or "zoo". Hjorthagen is the country's oldest animal farm that is still in use.
Adjacent to the deer enclosure is Fornhemmet, a homestead with older buildings from Bjärka-Säby's various farms. They were moved here in the 1920s, but were old even then and rather show what it could look like on the farms in the mid-19th century. There is also a small hay meadow. Fornhemmet is managed by Wist Hembygdsförening. At Fornhemmet there is information and a rest area with benches and tables.
In Hjorthagen and around Fornhemmet there is the largest concentration of old large oaks in the Oak Landscape. The oldest ones are believed to have been here even before the deer enclosure was built.
