Description

The forest in Gammelsälls nature reserve grows on rocky ground where it has been difficult to carry out forestry. The trees here have therefore been left untouched. There are no paths in the area, but there is a tractor road that you can walk on. The forest and the large boulders offer great nature experiences. The area is located 8 kilometers north of Hedesunda and covers 34 hectares. Spruce is the most common tree species in the block-rich coniferous forest.

Large elements of leaves

In some places there are also large elements of deciduous trees. There are also plenty of remnants of very old forests in the form of coarse, old lying or standing dead pines. In some places in the coarse bouldery soil, there are wetter areas, known as acidic troughs.

There are impressive moss-covered boulders here. They testify to the power of the ice sheet when they were transported here and left behind when the ice melted away.

Significant for wood fungi

With its high natural value, the forest in the reserve is important for wood fungi and lichens, among other things. The unusual brown-powdered needle lichen can be found on decaying birch wood.
