Description

The habitat type seen over most of Sandön is tree-covered sand dunes, to find something similar in the same order of magnitude in central Sweden you have to go to Gotska Sandön or Fårö. The island's vegetation consists largely of windswept and small pines, although the pines that are over 200 years old are often slender trunks. Sandhamn was populated by pilots in the 18th century and grew during the 19th century when steamboat traffic arrived and Stockholmers built summer homes. In the late 1800s, one of Sweden's centers for sailboat enthusiasts emerged.

There are several walking trails on the island: a nature and environment trail of 2.5 km, as well as trails of 3.5 km, 5.5 km and the longest which is 8 km. They start from Sandhamn and lead past the fine sandy beach of Trouville and on around the island through the typical pine forest.
