WARNING - The reserve has scattered infestations of spruce bark beetle. This means that there are a lot of dead standing spruces in the forest and along Sörmlandsleden. The trees can fall suddenly and without warning. Keep an eye out and avoid visiting the reserve when it is windy! The Sörmland Trail in the nature reserve will no longer be maintained by the County Administrative Board.
Description
Welcome to the Österby nature reserve! Walk through the old coniferous forest and beautiful meadows. The relatively untouched forest has a high biodiversity. A variety of birds nest in the old trees, such as the black woodpecker, boreal owl, pygmy owl and the honey buzzard.
Capercaillie can be seen among the rocky outcrops surrounding the forest. Plants such as baneberry, alternate-leaved golden-saxifrage, and alpine enchanter's nightshade thrive in the wetter areas in the valleys.
Section 5:3 of the Sörmlandsleden trail (Paradiset—Hemfosa) passes through the reserve. Take a rest on one of the benches and enjoy the view of the meadows. Watch butterflies flutter by as you listen to the woodpeckers in the old pine forest beyond.
