Description

Öja-Landsort is the southernmost outpost of the Stockholm archipelago. Here, there is something for everyone—nature, culture, history, food—and places to stay the night.

The reserve is named after the island of Öja and the oldest lighthouse in Sweden, Landsort. You can get to the reserve by ferry from Ankarudden. It stops at different harbours depending on the wind and weather, but you're likely to begin your visit at Storhamn village, in the southern part of the island. This is where you'll find the lighthouse, the pilotage, cafés, restaurants and places to stay.

The Öjaleden trail leads you by the bird observatory, the Ersta battery, the plague cemetery and the labyrinth. You can hop off the trail to go for a swim or to see geological curiosities like the cliff at Helvetesskorret, or the giant's kettle, Helveteskällan—one of the largest in the country. The island is also great for watching migratory birds in the spring and autumn.

To read more about the island and the reserve, see the island's own webpage. (The County Administrative Board of Stockholm does not maintain this webpage).

Directions

There are regular ferries between Öja–Landsort and mainland Ankarudden. Note that the ferries arrive at different harbours depending on the weather. There's an information board by the crossing in the village that shows what time the next ferry departs and from which harbour (see photo). For current timetables, search for "29" in the search bar in Waxholmsbolaget's timetables (in Swedish) or use the SL travel planner and search for "Landsort".

By public transit: Take the train or bus to Ankarudden, where the ferries depart for Landsort. For current information on public transit, see sl.se

By car: Park you car at Ankarudden and take the ferry to Landsort.

From Stockholm: Take Route 73 towards Nynäshamn. Turn at Älgviken towards Nynäshamn Norra, Herrhamra, Torö. After 200 m, make a right towards Herrhamra, Torö. Follow the road 15 km to Ankarudden.

From Södertälje: Take Route 225 towards Nynäshamn. Shortly after passing Sorunda, continue straight towards Stora Vika. After 3 km, keep left at the fork towards Stora Vika, Nynäshamn. After 9 km, make a right turn towards Herrhamra. Follow the road to Ankarudden.

Reserve extra time for the bridge at Tottnäs. The bridge may open once an hour from June 1—August 31, 8:00 – 20:00. There's a fee to park at Ankarudden.

By private boat: Guest harbours to the north: Skravleviken or Norrhamn. It's also possible to moor in Österhamn, but space is limited since the ferries use the pier during westerly winds.

For safety and space reasons, private boats are not allowed to moor at Västerhamn (the piloting harbour). There are several natural harbours around the island that are suitable for anchoring during the summer. Please note that there may be swells from passing ships.
