Description
Here at Östra Brobänken on Skeppsholmen is the galleass Shamrock. The ship was built as a fishing vessel in the Netherlands in 1915. In 1969 she was bought by Birkagården and given the Swedish flag. The Shamrock was converted into a school ship and an extensive maritime business grew up around the ship, which was soon transformed into Skeppsholmsgården. Since 1969, Skeppsholmsgården has run leisure activities at the site for all ages with a cultural and maritime focus. In summer, sea sailing trips are organized with Shamrock for young people with the aim of educating students in good seamanship and navigation.
The ship, which measures 28 meters overall, has a steel hull and is just over 6.5 meters wide. The sailing area amounts to 450 square meters.
The galleass was the most common type of ship in the Nordic countries in the 19th century. The galleass is slant-sail rigged with two masts. On the galleass, the mainmast is placed furthest forward while the mizzenmast is the aft mast. Both masts usually carry gaff sails, topsails and, in the past, possibly a couple of square sails at the top of the main mast.
