Description
The Landsort lighthouse is the oldest lighthouse in Sweden and it's definitely a must-see for any visitor to the island. From here, you can enjoy a beautiful view and learn about the island's rich history.
As early as the 1640s, the Öija Båk beacon helped seafarers navigate the treacherous waters here. In 1658, the beacon was replaced and supplemented with mirrors and lighthouses, but it all burned down shortly thereafter. The present lighthouse, built in stone instead of wood, was constructed in 1670. Through the years, the lighthouse has been reconstructed, improved, electrified and finally automated.
There is a small exhibition and informational signs at the lighthouse.
The lighthouse and the nearby cliffs are popular birdwatching spots, especially in the early morning. It's also a nice place for a cup of morning coffee while watching the sunrise!
