Description
In the 1870s, Bergsund's shipyard on Södermalm needed to be able to take on ships that were so large that they could no longer be taken from Hornstull to Saltsjön via Slussen. Finnboda shipyard was then built. The shipyard had a heyday - but at the end of the 20th century, things went downhill. In 1981, the last ship was launched and after ten years as a repair yard, the company went bankrupt.
Many buildings from the shipyard era remain and have been put to new uses. Two brick buildings from the early 1940s at the entrance to the area have been used as offices and a market hall (canteen). A large hall building from 1928 with an impressive ceiling height near the water has been used as a machine shop. The yellow residential building with balcony extensions on the waterfront was built in 1945 as a carpentry workshop. Don't miss HSB's signs that tell about the history and transformation of the area!
