Description

Dammsjön is 20 meters above Erstaviken. In the 18th century, that drop was worth a lot! So much so that it was wise to dam up the lake, deepen and stone the stream. And then build wooden gutters to a water wheel. In 1736, two mills were running all year round. At first they ground rye and wheat from Erstavik's farms. Later, farmers from the archipelago also came to the bay to have their grain milled here.

Some forty millers from 150 years of milling are known by name.

Traces of the Erstavik mill are easy to see. Up by the lake there are remains of the mighty foundations of the dams. The ruins of the mill building down by the water, on the other hand, are on a private site that cannot be visited.
