Description
Calmare Hage is a dry meadow slope on the western slope of Stockholmssåsen. It is managed as a hay meadow by mowing every year in the spring and mowing in the high summer. This means that the meadow has a very rich flora that is important for birds and various insects, such as wild bees and butterflies.
In April each year, the slope is covered with purple coneflowers, and later the flowers here include cowslips, fenugreek, sweet vernal grass, chickweed, creeping thyme, gray mallow, yellow moon, cowslip, St. John's wort, bluebells, cornflowers, wild strawberries, black cowslips, tar flowers, spring pea, meadow oats and meadow violets.
Because the land has been grazed by cattle or mown by farmers from Hammarby village and Holmen's farm for hundreds of years, the diversity of plant species has been preserved and developed into the flora we can see today.
Since 1992, Väsby Naturskyddsförening has kept Calmare Hage open through annual mowing, clearing and cleaning, with the result that many plants have returned. Since 2016, Upplands Väsby municipality has managed the hay meadow.
