Description

The Tryde nature reserve is one of Skåne's best places for amphibians. In the reserve's small ponds and in the surrounding pastures, you can find several different species, including the unusual onion frog, which has one of its largest populations in the country right here.

Gravel pit turned into frog ponds

The reserve is located in an area rich in glacial deposits and belongs to the ridge known as Ramsåsaåsen. For a long time, the land in the area was used as pasture, but in the 20th century it was converted first to arable farming and then to quarrying. Between 1986 and 2001, gravel extraction was carried out in large parts of the ridge, but today there are instead frog-rich ponds in the old extraction area. In total, there are now six ponds in the reserve.

One of Sweden's largest populations of onion frogs

The rarest of the area's amphibians is the red-listed onion frog. Tryde is home to one of the country's largest populations of onion frogs. The onion frog is typical of the open agricultural landscape and thrives in areas with nutrient-rich small waters. During the day and during hibernation, the onion frog lies buried at a depth of up to one meter, which means that it is dependent on land with sandy or light soils that it is able to dig in.

Other amphibians in Tryde

The beautifully green leaf frog is another species that seeks out the small ponds in Tryde to play during balmy early summer evenings. In the reserve you also have the chance to see the common frog, field frog, bell frog, common toad and great and small newts.

Mammals, birds and flowers

The Tryde nature reserve was established primarily to protect amphibians, but the area is also home to hares, rabbits and deer. Buzzards and red kites are often seen flying over the area. Almond blossom, cowslip and bluebells grow in the area.

**Note and take into account that amphibians are very sensitive to disturbance, especially during the spawning period in April and May.
