Description

Traneröds mosse, Grindhus and Lilla Klåveröd are part of the Skåne Landscape Foundation's Klåveröd hiking area. The reserve is located up on Söderåsen and offers a wilderness feeling. Traneröd bog is one of the few raised bogs in western Skåne that has escaped drainage, peat extraction and cultivation. The bog has a rich bird life and there is an accessible footbridge that takes you out into the open bog. Lilla Klåveröd and Grindhus attract botanical walks in areas rich in stone walls and other cultural remains. There is a rest area with a fireplace and a dry toilet at Traneröds mosse and at Klåverödsdammen in the adjacent Klåveröd nature reserve Opens new window.

Örtrik bog

Mosses are made up of thick layers of white moss and they only get their nutrients and water from rainfall. Therefore, only plants that can cope with very nutrient-poor conditions can grow here. Examples of such plants are bellwort, roselle, cranberry, round-leaved willow and tufa. The bog is bordered by a damp fen where the beautiful marsh lily blooms in July-August.

Butterflies of the bog

Butterflies fly over the wet ground on hot summer days. The sedge butterfly, the marsh pearl butterfly and the violet blue butterfly are species that occur on the bog.

Birds of the bog

A number of bird species live on and around the extensive bog. One of these is the nightjar, a shy bird that reveals its presence on bright May nights with a characteristic creaking sound. Curlews, buzzards and cranes can also be seen. In the birch edge forest, woodcock, great tit and lesser spotted woodpecker nest.

Grindhus old-fashioned agricultural landscape

A beautiful lane leads the hiker to the rocky pastures of Grindhus. The lane, which was previously used to lead the cattle out into the pasture, is a result of the 19th-century farmer's hard work and farming toil. The countless stone walls date from the same period. Cultivation cairns, old roads and the terraced fields at Lilla Klåveröd are traces from even older times.

In the kingdom of the haymaker

The flora in the unfertilized pastures has benefited from many years of haymaking and grazing. At Grindhus, there are large quantities of the stately haymaking grass. The open pastures also grow, among other things, maidenhair fern, pig's-foot and sedge, as well as a number of colorful meadow waxwings.

Outdoor life

Traneröds mosse, Grindhus and Lilla Klåveröd are part of one of the Skånska Landskaps Foundation's well-visited and appreciated hiking areas, Klåveröd. There are several marked hiking trails in the area, from about 2 km to about 6 km. Two of them go through the reserve - the blue-marked Lilla Klåveröd (4 km) and the white-marked Långa spåret (5.2 km). Both pass Traneröd's bog and continue into Lilla Klåveröd's and Grindhus' flower-rich natural pastures with fine stone walls and other cultural remains. An accessible footbridge leads out onto Traneröd bog. Adjacent to the bog there is a dry toilet, bird tower and fireplace. Remember to bring charcoal if you are going to barbecue and to take your rubbish home. There are also picnic areas, shelters and a picnic hut in the adjoining reserve Klåveröd nature reserve opens in new window to the south. Both reserves are part of the large Strövområdet Klåveröd Link to another website, opens in new window.. Outdoor facilities and trails are described on Stiftelsens Skånska Landskaps website Link to another website, opens in new window..

In English

Welcome to Traneröds mosse, Grindhus and Lilla Klåveröd Nature Reserve

At Traneröds Mosse (Traneröd Bog) there is a chance to experience a little bit of the nature of northern Sweden, without having to travel too far. The raised bog forms a large, open space enclosed by the surrounding coniferous forest. Out on the boggy plain there is only the occasional tree, but you can find both cloudberries (a very special berry found only in cold climates) and singing Common Snipe. Walk among the quagmires and moss on paths of wooden planks

Traneröds Mosse is one of the few undisturbed areas of raised bog in Skåne. It belongs to the south-western Atlantic type of raised bog, which is very rare in Europe. Söderåsen gets a lot of rain when weather fronts from the Atlantic are forced up over the ridge. The location close to the coast, combined with the large amount of rainfall, means that the flora of the raised bog has a special composition, which differs from that of the country's other raised bogs.

At its deepest point, the bog is over 25 metres deep, and at the bottom lies the glacial lake that was created when the inland ice sheet receded. Carrs and bogs are wetlands that have become overgrown. Decomposition happens very slowly in the waterlogged ground, primarily due to a lack of oxygen. A thick layer of dead plant material that has not been broken down slowly builds up into a thick layer of peat. In the end, the bog becomes so high that it lies over the surrounding land. The bog then becomes increasingly lacking in nutrients and the special plants that thrive on the wet, meagre soil start to become dominant; Sphagnum Moss, Cross-Leaved Heath, Hare's-Tail Cottongrass and Sundew. The bog is surrounded by a carr which drains the water from the bog's domed surface.

From the top of the bird tower by the car park, you can look out over the whole bog with its open surface, the encircling carr and the surrounding forest. Perhaps a northern emerald dragonfly will fly past. Traneröds Mosse is one of the most southerly sites for this species. If you stay until it gets dark in June, you can hear the magical, purring summer night's call of the Nightjar which flies between trees.
