Description

Are you interested in lichens? Then the Timan Reserve is for you. Biologists surveyed the area in 2001 and found over 60 different species of lichen. Although the trees are not large and stately, there are old trees and a large amount of dead wood. Tall stumps and lying trees are covered with mosses, lichens and fungi.

Old forest rich in lichens

Although much of Sweden is covered by forest, it is precisely the lack of old-growth forest that has led to many species of lichen being rare or disappearing completely. This is why the beech forest in the Timan reserve is interesting. The presence of so many species of lichens shows the richness of old trees and dead wood.

Lichens grow slowly and have high demands on the environment not to change. They need shade and moisture to thrive. There are several very unusual species in the reserve. Pink lichen and beech lichen are two of them.

Outdoor life

Skåneleden runs along the southern edge of the reserve. There is no parking. Skåneleden has a rest area near the toll road that leads to Timan from the south. The road barrier and rest area are about 1 km south of the reserve. Remember to take your trash home.

Welcome to Timan Nature Reserves

Are you interested in lichens? Then you have come to the right place. More than 60 different species of lichens have been found in Timan Nature Reserve.

Although large parts of Sweden are covered in forest, it is the lack of old forest that has led to many species of lichens having declined or disappeared entirely. The forests in Timan have been here for a long time. As early as 1684, the Buhrman map of Skåne shows beech forest growing here. The long continuity together with an abundance of old and dead trees provide the

conditions for a highly species-rich lichen flora.

Lichens grow slowly and are dependent on their habitats remaining unchanged. They also need shade and humidity to thrive. There are several rare species in Timan Nature Reserve. Bacidia rosella and the rim lichen Lecanora glabrata are two of them.
