Description
Östra dammarna is a municipal nature reserve just north of Lomma. The urban reserve invites you to enjoy walks, bird watching and fishing.
Water-filled brick ponds
The eastern ponds were created in the 19th century when Svensabruket used the area as a clay quarry for the production of bricks. The so-called "Lommaleran" is a late glacial marine clay and its yellowish color can still be seen on many brick houses in the area. In 1950, the Svensabruket was closed down and the clay pits were filled with water. Soon afterwards, the ponds began to attract a rich bird life and as early as 1982 the first pond in the area was protected as a nature reserve. In 2013, the reserve was expanded to include two more smaller ponds and the surrounding meadows and ruderal areas.
Bird life
The varied environment is home to a rich plant and animal life. A variety of birds can be seen in the ponds, such as the bearded grebe, gray partridge, lapwing and mute swan. In the reed belts of the shore zone, iron sparrow, marsh tit and nightingale have been found.
Fishing and outdoor life
The East Pond is a popular fishing area and after purchasing a fishing license you can fish for roach, pike, perch, bream and tench. If you are lucky, you may also see snook swimming in the lake. There is a path and several picnic areas in the area. Remember to take your rubbish home.
In Lomma municipality's brochure "Guide to nature in Lomma" Pdf, 6.3 MB, opens in new window there is more information about accessibility and facilities for outdoor life in all reserves and nature areas.
