Description

Here in the nature reserve Östra Bosjöklosterhalvön you will be greeted by a fine view of the open meadows with Ringsjön as a backdrop. In the spring, pike head up to the flooded meadows to spawn. But there are also shoreline birds here, such as red-legged kittiwakes and lapwings. Maybe you'll see brown harriers or ospreys? Otherwise, old and gnarled oaks are a hallmark of the area around the old nunnery Bosjökloster. The oaks here in the reserve have grown up in what was used as a meadow by Bosjökloster in the 19th century. You can wander freely in the periodically wet grounds. There is a fireplace near the parking lot at Ringsjön.

Pike playground

In the spring, something strange happens - the pike come up to the flooded meadows to spawn. They lay their eggs in the shallow, heated water around the meadow plants. A couple of weeks later, a new batch of pike have hatched. Shore meadows like this are very important for the survival of the pike and for the well-being of Lake Ringsjön.

Grazing cows = nature conservation

Cows keep the shore meadow vegetation in check so that trees, bushes and reeds do not spread. The shallow water in the flooded meadow can then be quickly warmed up by the spring sun and the pike's eggs and fry can develop faster.

Bird life

It's not just the pike that thrive on the grazed meadow. If we're lucky, wading birds such as redshanks and lapwings can also raise their young here. There are plenty of birds of prey in the area. You can see ospreys diving for fish and in winter, white-tailed eagles glide majestically over the lake. In some years, the brown marsh harrier nests in the reedbed.

Outdoor life

You can roam freely in the periodically wet fields, but avoid dogs among the grazing animals. There is a fireplace near the parking lot at Ringsjön. Remember to bring your own charcoal and to take your rubbish home.

In English

Welcome to Östra Bosjöklosterhalvön Nature Reserve

For hundreds of years, people have enjoyed the view out over the open coastal meadows with Lake Ringsjön in the background. Our forefathers have lived off the fertile soils and fish from the lake since the Stone Age. The old, gnarly oaks reflect the fact that Bosjökloster was used as a meadow in the 1800s.

Coastal meadows like these are very important for the survival and breeding of pike, and in turn for the well-being of Lake Ringsjön. Cows keep the vegetation under control, so that trees, bushes and reeds do not take over.

The shallow water which floods the meadow warms up quickly in the spring sunshine and means that the eggs and young of the pike can develop more quickly.

On the grazed coastal meadows, wading birds, such as redshank and lapwings rear their young. You can see ospreys diving for fish and in the winter the white-tailed eagle can be seen gliding majestically over the lake.
