Örnabjär, Naturreservat
- Nature reserve
- County: Skåne län
Actions
Description
Örnabjär is the remains of a volcano that was active at least 100 million years ago. The black blocks and stone pillars are a different natural experience. You will find this exciting nature in an area of old deciduous forest and shrub-rich pasture between Hässleholm and Höör. There is currently no parking and no marked trail.
A Scanian volcano
Skåne is special with its volcanic remains. Many of the so-called basalt domes are found in central Skåne. And they can be recognized by their black, often hexagonal stone pillars of basalt. Basalt is the fossilized lava or magma in the volcano's old crater tubes. Many of the Skåne volcanoes were active around 180 million years ago, but there are also younger ones.
Old cultural settlement
Much of the land in the reserve has been used as pasture for a long time and there are traces of cultivation. Low small piles of collected stones, known as cultivation cairns, can be found in several places and bear witness to the hardships of farming in earlier times.
Field with oaks and haymaking
The field, which has been grazed for many years, contains both junipers and a large number of large old oak, beech and lime trees. On the ground grows the sharp grass sedge and among the more eye-catching flowers are orange-yellow haystack and pink-purple maidenhair. Cat's foot has also been present, but has not been seen in recent years. In the varied pasture, you can see birds such as the hobby, yellowhammer and the green-cheeked woodpecker.
Old trees with wood pigeon and coral sponge
The beech forest, which is at least 150 years old, is full of trees with holes and cavities created by woodpeckers. The cavities can be used as nests by woodpigeons and sparrowhawks. But the cavities are also used by the area's bats. On the trunks, you can see the unusual lichen beech spring lichen and the white coral sponge.
There is also an uncleared 100-year-old broadleaf forest. There is a great mix of different tree species here, including lime, oak, beech, hornbeam, maple, ash and elm. Around your feet in summer you can see a lush greenery of yellow thistle, wood anemone, wood anemone, musk and wreath. Through the foliage, you may hear the songs of blackcaps and green warblers.
The otters of Vramsån
The Vramsån river runs along the northern edge of the reserve. With a little luck you may see otters here. The river is lined with alder and some ash, as well as long embankments of material and sediment from previous ditch clearing.
Outdoor life
Visitors come to Örnabjär to see the old volcanic remnant, the so-called basalt cap of the same name. The basalt outcrop with its basalt blocks is located in a pasture surrounded by electric fences. The fence wires can be lifted off when passing through. The nature reserve is located east of Tjörnarp along the road that runs through Ynglingarum. There is currently no parking lot, signs or directions to Örnabjär. Remember to take your rubbish home.
