Norra Ljunghusen, Naturreservat
- Nature reserve
- County: Skåne län
Actions
Description
Norra Ljunghusen consists mainly of flat coastal meadows. Parts of the area have been grazed for a long time and have a species-rich, grazed flora. In the east there are ungrazed parts, where the rare species Danish iris grows. Out on the sandy reef Black (Black's reef), both seals and seabirds stay.
Migratory birds and seals
The salt marshes and shallow water areas are of great importance for resting seabirds. Out on Black, a rocky and sandy reef that varies in size depending on the water level, terns and sandwich terns occasionally nest. The adjacent forest area south of the embankment is of great importance for bird life, not least as a resting place during migration. This is particularly true of many small birds, pigeons and birds of prey such as buzzards, bees, sparrowhawks and goshawks. In recent years, the fire-crowned kingfisher has become a regular visitor to this part of the reserve.
Black's Reef is also a popular resting place for seals.
Pastures with long continuity
Parts of the area have been grazed for a long time and are still grazed. Here you can find a remnant of the old agricultural outfields. The land has never been fertilized and has a species-rich flora with species such as snake's tongue, bladderwort, coastal arum and goosegrass. Other parts of the pasture are in various stages of overgrowth. In the east, there are uncultivated areas dominated by more or less widespread reed beds with sea buckthorn and bladderwrack. In some places, the protected species Danish iris has been found.
The old railway track
An old railway embankment runs along the southern border of the reserve. Trains loaded with bathing Malmö residents passed here on their way down to the sandy beaches of Skanör-Falsterbo during the first half of the 20th century. In the early 1970s, the railway was demolished and the old embankment is now used for walking, cycling or riding between Höllviken/Ljunghusen and Skanör-Falsterbo.
Outdoor life
The Skåneleden trail that runs through the reserve runs partly on the old embankment. On the embankment it is possible to hike, cycle and ride through the area. Do not miss to look for seals out on Black's reef. Parking space is available at the old station house which is adjacent to the reserve. The nearest bus stop is Ljunghusen Storvägen. Remember to take your rubbish home.
Norra Ljunghusen is one of nine nature reserves around the Falsterbo peninsula. There are good outdoor recreation opportunities in the area, including hiking, bird watching and swimming. The Skåneleden trail (SL5 Öresund, stages 20 and 21) takes you around the entire peninsula. Remember that the reserves have different regulations, so check what is allowed where you are!
