Actions
Description
Munkarps jär is a small nature reserve on the southern edge of Munkarps village. The reserve consists of a beech and oak-covered pebble ridge.
The "Jär" or ridge that makes up the reserve is an approximately 10 meter high and deciduous forest-clad pebble ridge. The reserve was established in 1978 to prevent a planned gravel extraction. In addition to beech and oak, the forest also has elements of hornbeam, lime, maple and wych birch. An unmarked path runs along the ridge.
In English
Welcome to Munkarps järNature Reserve
The forested elevation is one of the many eskers once located in the area around Munkarp. Today, many of the ridges are gone due to centuries of gravel extraction.
Eskers were formed when the inland ice melted more than 14,000 years ago. The ice-cold meltwater formed large rivers, which left behind long strings of gravel and stones. The steepest eskers are called sharp crested eskers. In Skåne, a special word for steep ridge is used, reflected in the name of the reserve - jär.
Forest and scrub now clad the 10 meter high ridge in green. Just to the west of the nature reserve is another remain of an esker, protected as a natural monument since 1960.
