Maglarps sandtag, Naturreservat

Description

Maglarps sandtag is a municipal nature reserve in Trelleborg municipality. The reserve includes a disused sand quarry. Many species of solitary bees thrive in the sandy reserve, and the sandy slope is home to swallows.

Favorable microclimate

The Maglarp sand quarry has been subject to quarrying activities for a long time, at least since the 1920s. The microclimate, the sand, the herbs, the willow and the solar radiation on the surrounding embankments, especially those facing south, create specific and very good conditions for, for example, solitary bees, other creepers and beetles to thrive in the area.

Species dependent on disturbance

Several sand-living herbs and insects are dependent on the vegetation cover being "disturbed" so that sandy patches are created to prevent the broad-leaved and nitrogen-rich grasses from taking over. Shrub and tree vegetation has been established in the middle of the reservoir, mainly consisting of various species of willow, which provides good protection for birds and wildlife.

Large colony of humpback swallows

Sandtaget contains one of Skåne's largest colonies of humpback swallows. The colony is over 50 years old. In some years in the 60s, up to 1,200 nest holes were observed in the cliffs. The small pond, in the south-eastern corner of the reservoir, is home to, among other things, the great crested newt, the common toad and the common frog.

Outdoor recreation

In this small reserve there is a marked path that takes you through the area. It is also possible to roam freely through the pasture and the small forest. However, it is forbidden to enter the sandy area and the sandy slope. The path, which is partially accessible, takes you to the beautiful swallow's nest, where you can see humpback swallows during their nesting season in May-July. There is a parking lot adjacent to the east of the reserve and the nearest bus stop is Maglarp, which is a few hundred meters north. Remember to take your rubbish home.
