Description
Klåveröd Nature Reserve is part of the Skåne Landscape Foundation's hiking area of the same name. The broadleaf forest is hilly with spectacular cliffs and valleys. Several marked hiking trails take you around the area, one of which takes you to the Skorstensdalen valley with its chimney-like rocks. The nearest neighbor is Söderåsen National Park Link to another website, opens in new window... In the northeast there is Traneröd's bog, Grindhus and Lilla Klåveröd's nature reserve.
Söderåsen with strange stone formations
Klåveröd Nature Reserve is located high up on Söderåsen, which is one of Skåne's large horsts or mountain ridges. Like Linderödsåsen, Romeleåsen and Hallandsåsen, Söderåsen lies in a fault zone that runs diagonally through Skåne, from Kullaberg and Bjärehalvön in the northwest to Stenshuvud and Kivik in the southeast. Here, strong movements in the earth's crust have contributed to the rather dramatic nature, events that are also partly related to the formation of the Alps about 70 million years ago. The most obvious formation from this time is the public Skorstensdalen with its high stone pillars.
Stone walls and torp ruins from the past
Klåveröd has plenty of fossilized arable land and several late stone walls. Together with three croft ruins and the remains of a wheel mill, they remind us of the hardships of farming in earlier times. In modern times, large parts of the area have been used for forestry production, with the exception of the inaccessible mountain slopes and the pond in Klåveröd. The dam was built in the 1960s to enable the construction of a forestry road and today offers fishing opportunities.
The beech woodland redstart lives in the shelter of old beech trees
The inaccessible slopes are home to deciduous forests that have never been used for forestry. There are many old and late-growing trees, especially beech trees. There is also plenty of dead wood and dying trees. This in turn means that species that depend on old and dead trees thrive here. In Klåveröd's natural forest-like environments, you can find fungi such as the southern sooty fungus and the fire blight. On the trunks of the trees you can also find beech spring lichen and on the ground below Danish blue moss. Some of the most exclusive beetles found in the area are the beech forest redstart and the beech bark beetle.
In the forests you can also see and hear the wood pigeon, the black woodpecker and the fire-crowned kingfisher with its orange head. The nuthatch is also found in the area, and along the Dejebäcken stream you may be lucky enough to see the lesser flycatcher.
Outdoor life
Klåveröd Nature Reserve is part of one of the Skånska Landscape Foundation's well-visited and appreciated hiking areas, Klåveröd. There are several marked hiking trails in the area, from about 2 km to about 6 km. Four of them run in the reserve and start from the large car park by the pond in Klåveröd: Korta spåret (green - 2 km), Långa spåret (white - 5.2 km), Skorstensdalen (purple - 3.6 km) and Svartesjö (yellow - 3.2 km). A little to the north there is a 5.3 km long mountain bike trail (pink). The Skåneleden trail (SL3 Ås-Ås) also passes through the area. Along the Skåneleden trail and at the car park at Klåverödsdammen there are rest areas with shelters and fireplaces. Remember to take your rubbish home. Outdoor facilities and trails are described on Stiftelsens Skånska Landskaps website Link to another website, opens in new window.

Welcome to Klåveröd Nature Reserve
Klåveröd Nature Reserve is part of the Scanian Landscape Foundation's recreation area with the same name. The broad-leaved woodland area is hilly with spectacular cliffs and valleys. Several waymarked trails take you around the site, where there are both shelters and barbeque areas. The nearest neighbor is Söderåsen National Park. To the northeast is Traneröd Mosse, Grindhus and Lilla Klåveröd Nature Reserve.
In the area that is now known as Skåne, a dramatic spectacle took place 150 million years ago. There were lava-spewing volcanoes and large horsts of rock were pushed up, all thanks to powerful movements in the earth's crust. It was partly during this time that the most impressive ridges in Skåne were formed, including Söderåsen. This can be worth pondering over as you walk past the Reserve's steep cliffs and remarkable stone pillars in Skorstensdalen.
Thanks to the inaccessible steep slopes of Söderåsen, parts of the woodlands have avoided heavy exploitation by us humans. The trees have been allowed to live out their lives which is why there are plenty of both old and dead trees.
In modern forestry, all trees are felled at a young age, so there is an acute housing and food shortage for many of the species that live in woodlands. The older a tree gets, the more habitats are created - in the cracks of the coarse bark, in the hollows created from a fallen branch or in the decayed wood left behind by a wood decay fungus. Here in Klåveröd there are rare species such as, the pox lichen Pyrenula nitida and the red-horned cardinal click beetle. Both are dependent upon the old trees on the steep slopes.
