Description

Klagshamnsudden is located just over a mile south of central Malmö and is a popular recreational area. The headland is built up from the remains of the lime and cement industry that existed here in the 1880s and 1930s. The coastal location and the limestone-rich environment contribute to a varied landscape with special flowers and a rich bird life. The area's ponds are also a refuge for the otherwise rare green spotted toad. This municipal reserve is easily accessible and attracts dog walkers and hikers as well as horse riders, fishermen and wind and kite surfers.

Artificial headland with odd plants

Klagshamn's headland is artificial and consists of remains from limestone mining and cement production around the turn of the last century. Today's marina at the far end of the headland was then used for shipping cement and coal. Danish iris is an exotic plant that probably spread here via the busy boat traffic in the 1890s. However, the calcareous environment has mainly attracted calcareous species, not least orchids such as marsh marigold, meadowsweet and soapwort.

Bird-rich ponds and flying bats

The old limestone quarries are now filled with water. In the larger, Stora Kalkbrottssjön, little grebe, bearded grebe and gray-headed grebe are often seen. In winter, many ducks also come here to rest. You can see species such as lapwings, shelducks and wigeons. In recent years, the municipality has also built ponds to help the green-spotted toad thrive in the area. The headland of Klagshamn is also a rich bat habitat. You can see flying water bats during the day, otherwise it is at dusk that they whizz past in their hunt for insects.

Outdoor life and accessibility

Klagshamnsudden is a well-visited area where several different interests come together. People come here to hike and walk their dogs, ride horses, fish, go boating, windsurfing, kite surfing and swimming. The nature reserve is easily accessible and can be reached by foot, bike, public transport or car. There are several parking lots along the bathing road that goes out to the tip of the headland. At the bathing area there is access to toilets, changing cabins, a playground and a seasonal kiosk. Remember to take your rubbish home.
