Högestads mosse, Naturreservat

  • Nature reserve
of 5 stars

Actions

Description

Högestad's bog consists mainly of grazed wet meadows and marshes surrounding a number of dry small hills. The reserve contains a wide variety of vegetation types, ranging from dry and poor heath to rich marshes. Therefore, up to 300 plant species can be found on Högestad bog.

Orchids and red-listed species

The varied environment in the reserve is home to a species-rich flora that includes several orchids and red-listed species. Corn vetch, wood anemone, large eyebright and marsh orchid are some of the threatened species found on Högestad bog. Many butterflies thrive on the flower-rich soils, and the marsh also contains the red-listed calcareous marsh grass snail.

Wildlife of the bog

Peat was previously mined on the bog, and some visible traces of this activity are the open water pools in the reserve area. Today, the ponds attract amphibians, and onion frogs and leaf frogs have been noted in the area.

Several different mammals seek out the relatively unexploited reserve. Roe deer, hare, fox and fallow deer are some of the species that have been seen on Högestad bog.

Outdoor life

Högestads mosse is a wet and inaccessible pasture in places. There are no facilities for outdoor activities. Avoid dogs among the grazing animals.
