Description

The coastal waters around Falsterboön, or Falsterbo Peninsula as it is often called, is a sandy area with no equivalent in Sweden. The shapes of the beaches are constantly changing due to wind, waves and currents. The shallow sandy bottoms, the eelgrass beds and the high water turnover create conditions for a rich biological life. During the summer, bathers flock to the white sandy beaches.

Up on the Falsterbo peninsula there are seven more nature reserves to explore: Kämpinge beach bath, Ljungskogen-Ljunghusens beach bath, Skanörs ljung, Måkläppen, Flommen, Skanörs höll and Norra ljunghusen. When there is an overlap, both reserves' regulations apply.

Water and wind

Water and wind constantly reshape the beaches around the entire coastal strip. Lagoons and reefs form and disappear. The shallow bottoms with their sandbanks and lush eelgrass beds create conditions for rich plant and animal life. The eelgrass is the nursery ground for cod, flatfish, eel and sea bream, and is Sweden's most important breeding ground for turbot. The eelgrass beds are also home to a rich fauna of small shrimps, bristle worms and shells. Herring and garfish spawn in the coastal area.

Migratory birds

Thousands of birds pass through here during spring and fall. In addition to being a resting place, the Falsterbo peninsula is also important for nesting and wintering. Swans and ducks graze on the eelgrass, waders are seen on the beaches and in the shallow waters, and other birds, including cormorants, dive for food in deeper waters.

Seagull Cape - the peninsula of seals

Surrounded by the sea area of the Falsterbo peninsula is the nature reserve Måkläppen Link to another website.. The long, narrow sandy reef of Måkläppen is home to the country's only colony of both harbor and gray seals. For gray seals, it is also the only haul-out site in the southern Baltic Sea. The grey seal is our largest seal species and can be around three meters long. The harbor seal is much smaller. Both seal species can be seen lying on land in small groups, but the harbor seal always keeps a certain distance from its neighbor. It is mainly harbor seals that give birth to their pups in the area.

Wreckage washed ashore

In the coastal waters around the Falsterbo peninsula there are shipwrecks that bear witness to the busy traffic that has taken place here since the Middle Ages. Occasionally, wrecks and wreckage can be exposed or washed ashore, for example on Måkläppen.

**Please note that in parts of the Falsterbo peninsula's marine area and adjacent reserves, access is prohibited during certain parts of the year.

In English

Welcome to Falsterbohalvöns havsområde Nature Reserve

The waves and currents are constantly reshaping the beaches around the Falsterbo peninsula. Lagoons and sand banks form and then disappear. The shallow waters, with their sand banks and green fields of eelgrass, create the conditions for a rich biodiversity. The eelgrass provides shelter for cod, flatfish, eel and lumpfish, and this is Sweden's most important reproductive environment for turbot. Herring and garfish spawn in the coastal area.

Thousands of birds pass the peninsula during spring and autumn. The area also provides an important habitat during breeding season and a site where winter can be spent. Sweden's only colony of both harbor seal and grey seal is found on Måkläppen. It is also the only resting place in the southern Baltic for the grey seal. The grey seal (Halichoerus grypus) is our largest species of seal and can grow to just over three meters in length. The harbor seal (Phoca vitulina) is smaller. Both seal species can be seen lying in groups up on land, but the harbour seal always maintains a certain distance from its neighbor.

The coastal waters contain shipwrecks that are proof of the lively traffic that has moved through the area since the middle ages.

The Falsterbohalvöns havsområde Nature Reserve comprises the waters around the

Falsterbo Peninsula. Where the marine areas overlaps within one of the Nature Reserves on Falsterbo Peninsula - Kämpinge strandbad, Ljungskogen-Ljunghusens strandbad, Skanörs ljung, Måkläppen, Flommen, Skanör Höll or Norra Ljunghusen - the regulations of both reserves apply.
