Dalköpinge ängar, Naturreservat

Dalköpinge ängar is located just east of Trelleborg, next to the popular bathing area Dalabadet. The area is protected mainly because of its flora, but is also an important nesting and resting place for several bird species.

Dalköpinge ängar consists of open grazed land and wetlands that are important for bird life, among other things. The reserve is one of the few undeveloped and open green areas adjacent to the coast east of Trelleborg. The nature reserve's meadows slope towards the wetland at the former channel of the Gislöv River.

Pastures with long continuity

Most of the reserve has probably never been plowed, but has been grazed for hundreds of years. The flora and fauna are well adapted to this form of cultural influence. A very species-rich calcareous wet meadow has formed in the land adjacent to the marsh, in the former river channel. The proximity to the sea means that marsh plants are mixed with marine plant species.

Other vegetation types in the area are heath and dry meadow. In the drier parts, red campion, wood anemone, almond flower, buttercup and thistle grow. In the wetter parts, there is spring grass, water veronica, blanket bindweed, and corn and meadow lilies.

Wildlife

The rare butterfly species leech bud butterfly has a permanent presence in the reserve where its host plants (leech bud, caveldun and sword lily species) can be found in the western part of the meadows. Many waders visit the reserve and, among others, lapwings, redshanks and snipe have nested in the area.
