Bjära, Naturreservat

The small Bjära nature reserve is located on Linderödsåsen. In this area, the calcareous diabase rock has penetrated cracks in the lean granite. The influence of the diabase is clearly reflected in the unusually rich flora.

Meadow deciduous forest with cairns

Most of the area consists of meadow deciduous forest. Beech and oak dominate, but ash, linden and maple also grow here, and in wetter parts mainly birch and alder. The south-eastern parts, partly overgrown pastures, are leaner and dominated by birch. Both moose and deer thrive in these shrub-rich thickets. In the northern part there is a small pasture and former fields. The cairns remain, but today there are dense groves of hazel, beech, lime, maple and aspen.

Fine grove flora

The field layer is very rich with a fine grove flora mainly in the western part. Common species include common ragweed, goat's rue and wreath ragweed, hollow needlewort, columbine and musk madder. In the old pasture grows, among other things, maidenhair, buttercups and cuckoo pea.

Abandoned quarries

In the central part of the area there are remains of two old diabase quarries. Mining took place for a short period in the 1930s and 40s, until it was realized that the diabase was not of sufficient quality.
