Description

On Åsum's meadows, the link and the overcast have created fine bird fields to enjoy from the bird tower. On a late summer day you can see cranes, curlews, greylag geese, lapwings and a flock of starlings pecking for insects. Suddenly, the geese fly up - could it be a sea eagle that scared them?

The variety makes many thrive

In front of the bird tower and to the north is open hay and pasture land. Here, redshanks, curlews and lapwings thrive in the grazed grass. Yellow Storks snatch insects right next to the cows.

To the south, the meadows turn into willow thickets. Saw-whet sparrows, warblers and grasshopper warblers thrive here. At the bottom in the south grows one of the finest swamp forest areas in Vattenrike. There are plenty of high stumps and fallen trees that favor woodpeckers, insects and fungi.

Nearest to the lake, there are large mudflats. Brown harriers, bearded tits and reed warblers live here. Between the reeds and the meadow is the "blue border" where the grazing animals graze the reeds a bit out into the lake. There is plenty of food here for shoveler, teal and dunlin.

Grazing and haymaking provide good conditions for birds

The meadows along Lake Hammar have provided grass and hay for farmers' animals since time immemorial. From the 1950s, farming became increasingly large-scale. The meadows began to overgrow and wading birds and ducks found it difficult to nest. In the 1990s, work began to restore the meadows. Today, we can enjoy the results.

Accessibility

There is a combined bird tower and outdoor museum. The ramp up is a total of 30 long with several. Handrails are available. On the lower part of the platform there are exhibition materials and a place for a view of the lake. There is a narrow bench without armrests. A curved staircase with handrail leads to the upper level, which is the viewing area. Parking is available directly next to the platform. More detailed information on accessibility can be found on the Equality website.
