Description
There is something for everyone in Äspet. The sea invites you to take a refreshing swim, and the beach and Kronoskogen forest are perfect for long walks. In the lagoon, wading birds and ducks gather to watch from the bird towers.
Sand, sea and sky as far as the eye can see. In Åhus, Hanö Bay's miles of beaches begin with eel stalls in a row. In summer, vacationers flock to the beach to sunbathe, swim and have coffee.
Birdwatchers have something to see all year round in Äspet. In the spring, little terns and lapwings roost in the lagoon, and sandpipers and shags nest on the sandbanks. The terns fish in the sea outside.
Even on an overcast September day, there are birds to watch. Skylarks and swallows fly over the reeds and a stone falcon chases a meadow pipit across the lagoon. Out in the sea, a group of barge geese rests in search of eelgrass.
Main route for migratory birds
Äspet is in the middle of the migration line between Öland and Falster-bo and as many as 1000 wading birds of up to 20 different species can be gathered in one place. Dunlin, curlew, ruff and greenshank are some of the many that pass by.
A walk into the Kronoskogen forest provides shelter from the fresh winds of the sea. In the middle of the forest you can hear nothing but the sounds of nature. A stone's throw from Åhus square, it feels like you are in the middle of the wilderness.
Large old pines grow in the forest, but also oak, hazel and beech. The ground is covered with gray lichens and mosses in lovely green colors.
For the birdwatcher, the common crow, green warbler, yellowhammer and flycatcher are a fine complement to the seabirds, wading birds, terns and ducks on the beach.
