Asbjär, Naturreservat

  • Nature reserve

Description

"A forested little peak that stands out" - yes, Asbjär is a high oasis in the rolling hills by Lake Börringesjön in southwestern Skåne. The reserve has no facilities for outdoor life.

Height carried there by the inland ice

Asbjär is a wooded hill that rises up in an open and hilly agricultural landscape southwest of Börringesjön, between Anderslöv and Svedala. On Asbjär there is a beech forest with several large old trees. The hill was formed when the inland ice melted away. All the stone and gravel that was frozen in the ice ended up in a pile when the ice melted and ran away as water. The elongated depressions visible in the area may be so-called erosion channels. Channels created when large amounts of meltwater from the ice flowed away.

Elevation in historical pasture landscape

The hill is already clearly visible on maps from the 1680s. At that time, the surrounding landscape consisted mainly of pastures with wide-crowned old trees. On 19th century maps, the hill is covered with deciduous forest and is called Asbjär hill. Some old trees from this pasture era still exist today. They can be recognized by their wide crowns and rough branches and trunks.

Hill with old nature conservation trees

Large old beech trees with low-lying branches and hollows are visible in several places. These coarse trees favor everything from wood-living insects and mosses to birds and bats. A grove flora grows on the ground, with species such as desm bud, musk madder, horsetail, wood anemone, wild garlic, hollow needlewort, bush starflower, large rams and woodland bengal.

There is a relatively large amount of deciduous forest around Börringesjön, and Asbjär will be an important link in the green infrastructure in the landscape.

Outdoor life

Asbjär is located at Ugglarp, midway between Svedala and Anderslöv. It is a fairly small and hilly reserve that is mainly used by local residents. There are no marked paths and the reserve is located along a small dirt road without access to parking and a turning area. Remember to take your trash home.
