Description

The Ugglehöjden nature reserve's forests consist of pine-clad rocky areas and damp spruce forests. There are bogs, ponds and large boulders. The forest is rich in species and similar to primeval forest, but the most exciting feature is perhaps the deep Hjortel cave.

Restricted access

Right now it can be a little difficult to get around on parts of the path in the reserve due to many fallen trees.

Rare fungi and lichens

The reserve is located in a part of southern Kilsbergen that is extremely rich in large stones and boulders. The core area is popularly known as Fasaskogen. The large boulders have made forestry difficult, and several species that have difficulty surviving in the normal, managed forest have found a refuge in the reserve. On decaying spruce trunks, the fungi woolly tick and border tick grow. On old aspens you can find unusual lichens such as lung lichen and western kidney lichen. And on a shaded cliff face in the reserve, brown shield lichen is found in one of only two known locations in the whole country.

Deer Cave

The Deer Cave is a crack in the bedrock that extends eight meters into the mountain. The ceiling height is almost four meters. At the far end there is a cross passage that is partly accessible. The cave is located west of Hjortelmossen and can be reached from a marked path from the parking lot. Bring a torch, the cave is completely dark! Hjortelgrottan is the second largest in southern Kilsbergen after the cave system in Jätteberget, which is located just over a mile southwest of Ugglehöjden.

Birds of Storskogen

Capercaillie, wolverine, pearl owl and sparrow owl are some of the birds you may encounter in the reserve. The good availability of aspen and other deciduous trees favors various woodpeckers. In addition to the great spotted woodpecker and the tawny owl, there are also greenfinches and the rare three-toed woodpecker. The large amount of deciduous trees is due to the fact that the area was previously affected by forest fires.
