Description

Trangärdet Nature Reserve is a wilderness area where you can experience the Norrland character of Kilsbergen. The area consists of marshes, bogs and mires alternating with ponds and old-growth forest. Birds such as the three-toed woodpecker, capercaillie and various owls thrive here. There are also rare lichens in the forest.

Nutrient-poor lakes and wetlands

In Trangärdet there is a mosaic of marshes, bogs, ponds and coniferous forest. The ponds and the only lake, Sävsjön, are all nutrient-poor. The bogs are partly covered with sparse, late-growing pine forest and, among other things, white mosses, water lilies and water clover. The bogs receive water and nutrients only from precipitation in the form of snow and rain and are therefore very nutrient-poor. The fens are slightly more nutrient-rich because they are in contact with soil water. The marshes and bogs in the area are unaffected by drainage and peat extraction. Between the wetter parts there are ridges, often with large boulders. The ridges are mainly covered with spruce and pine, but also with some deciduous trees such as birch and aspen. There are no marked trails in the reserve.

Species that thrive in old growth forest

The forest in the area is old and largely unaffected by forestry. There are many dead trees and trees of varying ages. The forest has been regularly affected by both forest fires and flooding caused by beaver dams. Many species that depend on this type of forest thrive in the area. For example, the gray bladderwort and the thin flarnwort. The area has an unusually rich bird life with species such as capercaillie, three-toed woodpecker, redstart, cuckoo, double-crested cormorant, nightjar and several species of owl. On the moors there are bird species such as greenlegs, whooper swans, cranes and golden plovers. Teal, goldeneye and mallard are found in the ponds.

Accessibility

Trangärdet belongs to level 1 in the county administrative board's leveling of the county's nature reserves, which means that the reserve has a wilderness character and lacks outdoor recreation facilities.

Please note that the area is located in the middle of Villingsberg's shooting range and can therefore only be visited on weekends, when there is no shooting, and during some summer weeks.
