Description

The Svarttjärnsskogen nature reserve and the adjacent Råmossen nature reserve contain untouched moorland and old-growth forest that has not been felled for over a hundred years, forming a real wilderness. Birds of the large forest such as capercaillie, pearl owl and three-toed woodpecker nest here. In spring, the grouse play out on the bogs.

Species-rich old-growth forest

Most of the reserve's forest is over 160 years old. The terrain is dramatic, with large boulders lying all over the place, which is one reason why the area has escaped modern forestry. Many rare lichens, mosses and fungi thrive in the untouched forest. The Svarttjärnsskogen nature reserve is bordered to the north and west by the larger Råmossen nature reserve

Demanding lichens

Many of the area's unusual lichens want high, even humidity and are therefore strongly linked to untouched forest. Perhaps the most striking lichen is the yarn lichen - a yellowish-white, large hanging lichen that dresses the branches of spruce trees. Lung lichen, coral lead lichen and Norwegian beak lichen are other exciting features of the lichen flora. Norwegian lichen is Värmland's landscape lichen. It has a limited, westerly distribution and is extremely dependent on high humidity. The woodpecker, great spotted woodpecker and three-toed woodpecker are among the area's breeding birds, and there are also sparrow owls and barn owls.

Accessibility

Svarttjärnsskogen belongs to level 1 in the county administrative board's leveling of the county's nature reserves, which means that the reserve has a wilderness character and lacks outdoor recreation facilities.
