Description

The Råmossen nature reserve contains untouched moorland and old-growth forest that has not been felled for over a hundred years, which together with the adjacent Svarttjärnsskogen nature reserve forms a real wilderness. Birds such as capercaillie, pearl owl and three-toed woodpecker nest here. In spring, the grouse play out on the bogs.

Restricted access

Right now it is a little difficult to get around on the path in the reserve due to many fallen trees.

Species-rich old-growth forest

Large parts of the reserve's forest are over 130 years old. The terrain is dramatic, with large boulders lying all over the place, which is one reason why the area has escaped modern forestry. Many rare lichens, mosses and fungi thrive in the untouched forest. In the southeastern part of the reserve is the small nature reserve Svarttjärnsskogen.

Demanding lichens

Many of the area's unusual lichens like high, even humidity and are therefore strongly linked to untouched forest. Perhaps the most striking lichen is the yarn lichen - a yellowish-white, large hanging lichen that dresses the branches of spruce trees. Lung lichen, coral lead lichen and Norwegian beak lichen are other exciting features of the lichen flora. Norwegian lichen is Värmland's landscape lichen. It has a limited, westerly distribution and is extremely dependent on high humidity.

Plants of the bog

The bogs are covered with low reeds, such as hemlock, water hemlock and dwarf birch. In the Lomtjärnsmossen bog, small pine trees also grow over almost the entire surface. Cranberries and cloudberries grow in the carpet of white mosses, as does the small orchid spiderwort. In the surrounding forests, there is another beautiful small orchid, the knee-rose. It thrives in deep moss in old spruce forest.

Playing grouse

Bird life is also rich. The woodpecker, great spotted woodpecker and three-toed woodpecker are all breeding birds in the area. There are plenty of black grouse and several capercaillie. The area is perhaps at its best on an early spring morning, when the cooing of the black grouse sounds over the marsh and the chorus of other birds is at its most intense, but the reserve has something to offer in all seasons.

Traces of charcoal production

In several places there are traces of past charcoal production in the form of ring-shaped elevations in the ground, known as charcoal beds. A charcoal kiln once stood in these places. The vegetation often differs from the surrounding vegetation and the soil is dark colored by coal residues.
