Description

In the 1800s peat-mining began in the area, an activity that continued until the end of the 1900s. It has with time become a beautiful wetland area and diverse bird species benefited from a better living environment in which to thrive. Waders such as lapwings and redshanks are species that have found themselves a habitat in the area.

Make sure you stop in Porla, an old spa from the 1600s. Many of the old buildings from the time of the wells are still there, likewise traces of the old wells. Below the dome is an old faucet where you can drink the famous spring water from Porla.

Recommendations

Sturdy shoes, as large parts of the area have no marked paths and can be wet. Binoculars for spotting birdlife!

Access

Parts of the area are approachable on wheels, as the largest lake and some of the birdlife can be seen from the gravel road.
