Description

The landscape is characterised by tundra with a peculiar flora thanks to the cold and barren climate. Here, you can hike along vast boulder ridges close to extremely steep mountain peaks on the Norwegian side.
If you walk up the mountain Pältsan you might be forunate enough to find the Laestadius poppy, a botanical rarity worth seeing.
The area is very rich in bird life, in particular passerines and wading birds. Many lakes and watercourses in the area are rich in fish.

From Pältsan, you can see the midnight sun from mid-May to the end of July.

This is how it works in a mountain cabin
Our mountain cabins offer a simple and authentic stay in multi-bedded rooms with self catering. The rooms are different sizes with bunk beds and usually heated by gas stoves. On site you will be greeted by a cabin manager. As a guest you chop wood, fetch water from the stream or lake, wash up and clean up after youself.

Directions

In summer, the easiest way to reach STF Pältsa is via a boat trip from Kilpisjärvi in Finland to Koltaluokta. There begins the summer trail to STF Pältsa, which is about 15 km from the jetty at Koltaluokta. More information about boats on Kilpisjärvi is available at https://swedishtouristassociation.com/boats

In winter you can ski from Kilpisjärvi across the lake of the same name to Koltaluokta and on to STF Pältsa. The distance from Kilpisjärvi to Pältsa is about 22 km in winter.

You can also access Pältsa from Signaldalen in Norge and stay at DNT’s Gappohytta on the way. The trail from Signaldalen to Gappohytta is not marked in winter, the winter marking starts on the border with Sweden.

Kilpisjärvi is reached most easily by car. Alternatively you can take a bus from Kiruna to Karesuando and continue by taxi. See https://ltnbd.se/ for more information about the bus to Karesuando.
