Stenträsket

The nature reserve's mosaic of forests and wetlands is a unique place worth visiting, despite the lack of trails and the presence of wet areas. Here, you can experience untouched wetlands and forests with primeval characteristics, giving you a sense of being in another world.

Stenträsket has an interesting history, as the forests burned approximately 250 years ago. Traces of this fire are still visible, such as charred stumps and the sparse tree growth that allows sunlight to reach the ground. The oldest pines in the reserve are nearly 500 years old and are more fire-resistant than spruces. The high humidity and the presence of old spruces create an ideal environment for sensitive species like the patchy polypore and rose polypore.

Additionally, the natural forests of Stenträsket are important reindeer grazing lands for the Tuorpon Sami village, which uses the area as winter and early spring grazing land.
