On the east side of Karhuvaara mountain lies the nature reserve Karhu pakura. Karhu means ”Bear” and the name indicates bears shuffling around in the surrounding undisturbed forests. On the steep slope, oldgrowth spruce and pine share the habitat with birch, aspen and knotted willows. The area is 2.4 square kilometres in size.
