Description
The peninsula of Skilsnäs is home to a rich birdlife,
and the nature is both valuable and favorable for lichens, mosses, insects, and
fungi. For much of the year, Skilsnäs is more of an island than a peninsula as
it is cut off from the land by high water.
Skilsnäs is a rocky and blocky
peninsula in Lake Flåren on the border between Jönköping and Kronoberg
counties. The island, which was previously used for grazing and mowing, is
today covered with old beech forest and mixed noble deciduous forest with
beech, birch, oak, alder, aspen, and elements of spruce. On the ground, herbs
such as toothwort, tussock sedge, hazelwort, and hepatica grow. Along the rocky
shores, the beautiful and rare bell gentian can be seen in some places.
Around
Skilsnäs, there are several small islands and skerries that are attractive
breeding grounds for seabirds such as osprey, black-throated diver, great
black-backed gull, and common tern. In the southern part of the reserve lie the
two Pine Islands.
