Description

At the tip of a cape in the
southern part of Lake Bolmen lies the Norrnäs udde nature reserve. The old
beech forest at the very end of the cape has been protected since 1937 and
became a nature reserve in 1996. In 2010, the reserve was expanded with an area
of mixed forest of beech and oak.

Norrnäs udde protrudes like
a pointing finger in the southwestern part of Lake Bolmen. Along the shore of
the cape, one can see a beach ridge in several places, a remnant from before
the water level in Lake Bolmen was lowered in the 1840s. At the very end of the
cape, there is an old beech forest with trees aged 120–140 years, and also some
older oaks. In the southern part of the reserve, younger beeches and oaks grow,
and here are also the foundations of the old dwelling Norrnäs, with history
dating back to the 14th century. The whole Norrnäs udde is rich in ancient
remains. Among other things, there are about 300 clearance cairns, and at the
very end of the cape, there are remains of a Stone Age settlement.

In the area, there are several rare species of lichens and mosses,
including the red-listed lichen species wart lichen, edge lichen, and lung
lichen. The reserve has a rich birdlife, and at Norrnäs udde, you can often
see, for example, Eurasian jay, common merganser, and black woodpecker, and if
you’re lucky, you might also spot the rare lesser spotted woodpecker that
sometimes resides in the coastal forest.
