Not far from Växjö city, but still with a distinctly rural feel, is the Hågeryd nature reserve. The famous brothers Erik and Sigvard tended the area throughout their lifetime. What remains today is a legacy of hay meadows and pastures with an unusually rich flora for us and for future generations to enjoy. Erik and Sigvard never used machines in their farming, but mowed their meadows with a scythe, in the old traditional way. Mowing meadows contributes to an increased species richness, and therefore the management has been taken over by the County Administrative Board to continue to manage the land as Erik and Sigvard did, by becoming a nature reserve in 2016.
Here you can walk along a blue-marked hiking trail in the area and at the same time admire the biodiversity and feel the wings of history. There is also parking, information signs and a picnic table. In the meadows and pastures, butterflies flap their colorful wings and here you will find the orchids Virgin Mary's keys, Night violet and Two-leaf. Meadowsweet, lesser celandine and hogweed are some other plants that thrive in the meadows.
In terms of trees, there are elms, ash trees and maples, as well as pollarded lime trees and the birch hill, where Erik and Sigvard dropped the saw. The mineral-rich water found under the ground in the reserve has created this diversity of plants in Hågeryd.
The nature reserve is managed by Kronoberg County Administrative Board.
