Description
On October 11, 1874, Agunnaryd Church was consecrated by Bishop H.G. Hultman of Växjö. It replaced the old church from the 13th century, which had stood abandoned and dilapidated for several years. The church has been renovated several times. In 1936, two side rooms were added to the chancel, and new windows were installed. In 1958, two rooms were created at the back of the church under the gallery, and in 2001, a new floor was laid in the chancel, the church roof was repainted, and the altar was moved forward.
The church’s interior also has a very distinctive appearance due to the two side galleries designed by the local son, county councilor J.M. Carlsson from Målensås, after the church plans had been approved. The apse painting and ceiling painting were executed by the artist Torsten Hjelm in 1937 and were partially reworked in 1957.
