Description

The shores of Lake Maren are lined with rocky outcrops, valleys and wooded slopes. There is a barren rocky pine forest, a distinctive scrub oak forest and a lush deciduous forest. Many rare animals and plants have found a refuge in this varied landscape.

Traces from the past

People have lived in these parts for a long time. There are plenty of ancient traces such as stone circles and burial cairns. Many of the remains are from the Bronze Age and are located on high ground. In several places in the reserve there are also remains of old crofts. The crofts belonged to Bälö, Stjärneberg and Bjurvik estates.

Deciduous forests

Today, forests grow in large parts of the nature reserve. In the past, the landscape looked different. Much land was used for haymaking and farming. In the outlying areas, beyond the fields and meadows, farmers' cattle went to summer grazing. Centuries of farming created a semi-open cultural landscape rich in deciduous trees. Here, light-loving oaks could sprout and spread their wide crowns.

The diversity of oaks

An old, rough and half-matured oak tree is teeming with life! On the bark, in the large branches and inside the rough trunk there is room for lichens, mosses, fungi and insects. The centuries-old oaks in the nature reserve are home to the protected leatherback beetle, among others. If you smell the sweet scent of peach or plum on an old oak tree, you have found the home of the leatherback beetle. The old oaks of Västra Marströmmen are also home to the oak ox - Europe's largest beetle.

Maren

Lake Maren is part of Marströmmen, which flows into Gåsfjärden at Solstadström. Fifteen different fish species are known from the water system, which is valuable for spawning and rearing whitefish and trout.
