Värnanäs skärgård, Naturreservat
- Nature reserve
- County: Kalmar län och Öland
Actions
Description
In this reserve you have the chance to see harbor seals. The Värnanäs archipelago is one of the few places in the Baltic Sea where there is a harbor seal colony. The reserve is also a good place for birdwatching.
Valuable for seals
The Värnanäs archipelago is the most important location for harbor seals in the Baltic Sea. At most 140 animals have been observed here. The site is one of the few in the Baltic Sea; most of our harbor seals are found on the west coast. At the turn of the last century, there were around 5,000 harbor seals in the Baltic Sea. During the 20th century, their numbers declined sharply, first through hunting and later due to environmental toxins.
Rich bird life
The reserve's varied archipelago is home to a rich bird life. In the shallow areas of the archipelago, grebes, grebe and little auks are found, and brown harriers patrol the reed beds. With a bit of luck, you can also add common tern, sandwich tern, little tern, osprey or white-tailed eagle to your observation list.
Storö natural monuments
In the pastures on Storö there are really old and large oaks. Some of the oaks are protected as natural monuments, an older form of protection for "distinctive natural objects that need special protection or care". The oaks, which are several hundred years old, are home to a variety of lichens, mosses, fungi and insects.
