Tjustgöl, Naturreservat

Description

The Tjustgöl nature reserve is located by the small lake Tjustgölen. Beautiful deciduous forest with very high natural values grows throughout the area. The most common trees are oak, lime, ash, maple and elm. The area has such high natural values because it is land that has been shaped over a long period of time by the use of the soil and by grazing animals.

Many trees bear clear traces of so-called pollarding. In the past, this was a way for farmers to supplement the winter feed for their animals. Thin twigs with leaves were simply cut off and dried in shards to be brought out in the winter darkness. Linden trees were particularly desirable as pollarded trees, as animals preferred these leaves to tougher and coarser leaves like elm.

When trees are repeatedly pollarded, the tree develops a defense system and shoots lots of new shoots, and the bark and trunk become rough and often a bit lumpy. Such hammered trees can become very old and often hollow. This is when they become really interesting for lots of insects, bats, birds, mosses, lichens and fungi! And this is where the high nature values start to come in!

This, combined with a great variety of small environments such as sunlit glades, dry rocky areas, small heights, large boulders and flowering forest edges, makes Tjustgöl the fine and important nature reserve it is.

In the spring, the fields bloom with lesser celandine, spring pea, musk madder and water lily, and the chorus of birds is impressive.
