Description

Strandskogen is home to magnificent beetles, strange fungi and beautiful flowers. The forest is part of the strip of deciduous forest that grows along the coast between Borgholm and Halltorp. The reserve also includes marine environments with lush eelgrass and seaweed meadows.

Forest with noble trees

The oak is Strandskogen's most common tree species. There are also plenty of other deciduous trees such as hornbeam, lime and maple. Notice all the old and dead trees,

tall stumps and decaying tree trunks on your way through the reserve. This is what it looks like in a forest where trees live and die at their own pace. However, many ash, elm and oak trees have died prematurely due to tree diseases.

Floral displays

In early spring, before the leaves burst, Strandskogen offers a colorful display of flowers. Among the yellow, blue and white sedges are swallow-wort, lungwort and spring pea. Later in the season, wood sorrel spreads out in large stands. The ivy, which envelops the tall tree trunks like a vine, can be seen all year round.

Valuable to many

The coastal forest is home to many rare lichens, fungi and beetles. The tiny lichens and wood-boring beetles can be difficult to spot. But some of the fungi you can spot! Most appear in the fall and many have

have fanciful names such as olive scale, balsam wax and ringworm.

Cultural forest

Until the mid-20th century, the coastal forest was a sparse and patchy forest. This was partly because the forest was grazed, and partly because farmers came here to collect firewood and timber. In the second half of the 20th century, the forest grew again. To recreate grazing forest

the southwesternmost parts have been restored in recent years. The goal is a forest with clearings where oaks and other deciduous trees have enough space to

grow into stately tree giants.
