Description

Dramatic cliffs, primeval forests, giant oaks and old crofts - Stora Vrången Nature Reserve offers extraordinary nature and a glimpse of life in the past. Hike the Tjust Trail and take part in all this. Perhaps you'll come across one of the many unusual species that have a sanctuary in the protected nature.

Discover the reserve from the Tjust Trail!

The Tjust Trail winds through the eastern half of the nature reserve. Thick ropes are available to help along the steepest sections. In several places you have an incomparable view - look out for bees and ospreys as you look out over the beautiful Björndalen. The trail also passes Björndalsstugan by Lake Stora Vrången, where there is a fireplace and a shelter.

Forest that has taken care of itself

It is not difficult to imagine why the farmers in the village of Larum did not use the forest on the slopes. Collecting firewood and timber from the hilly terrain was probably considered too difficult an undertaking. This is why there are so many old trees in the reserve's forests - a rarity in many other parts of the forest landscape. Some of the pines have an impressive age of over 300 years! The presence of old and dead trees is one reason why the reserve is home to many unusual species of fungi, beetles, lichens and mosses.

Cultural trees

Notice all the rough and wide-crowned trees on your walk. These trees tell us something, namely that cattle have grazed in the forest and made it loose so that the trees could grow and take their place. Grazing still takes place in the forest, albeit to a lesser extent than in the past.

Lush deciduous forest around old crofts

Not far from Björndalsstugan you can visit an old croft environment. A house foundation with a stovepipe still exists, as do some other foundations. The garden with its fruit trees can still be seen. Once, a long time ago, a crofter picked his fruit from these trees! Farming was also practiced here, but the crofters' crops have now grown back with lush deciduous forest.
