Mörbylånga - Öland
Welcome to the world heritage of southern Öland!
Solberga alvar is dominated by thin, weathered limestone soils. Despite the barren environment, there are a number of specialized plants and animals that endure the extreme conditions. Many are unusual, some even unique to Öland!
In early summer, Solberga alvar is colored in white, yellow and violet. The flowers include Öland sunflower, thyme, sow thistle and alvar mallow - tough plants that can withstand frost, drought and floods. Many mosses and lichens also grow on the gravel alvar, with wormwood lichen, slender lichen and stiff lime moss being just a few examples.
Alongside the extremely lean soils of the gravel alvar are the somewhat richer dry meadows, where light coneflower, field bindweed and big fat bud are characteristic species. The reserve also contains wetlands and old, water-filled quarries bordered by flower-rich wet meadows with herbs such as onion chamomile, lousewort and lime-cress.
In the Iron Age, the islanders traded with the Roman Empire. Several ancient castles and villages were built during this golden age of Öland. On Solberga alvar there are remains from this time in the form of three burial grounds and some round flat graves lined with stones (stone circles).
At the beginning of the 19th century, the pastures of the alvar were divided up between the villages. This is when the alvar got its characteristic grid of straight, sometimes mile-long stone walls. The walls not only kept the grazing animals in place, they also marked the boundaries between villages and farms. In the western part of Solberga alvar runs Mittmuren, a 3.5-mile-long stone wall that cuts across Stora alvaret from north to south.
