Description
In the Segersgärde reserve you can experience nature typical of Tjustlandet. The landscape is a mosaic of rocky areas, old coniferous forest and pastures with deciduous trees. The varied nature paves the way for a rich plant and animal life with many unusual species.
Traces of primeval and ancient times
The bedrock in the area consists of quartzite, which is recrystallized sandstone. It was formed almost 2 billion years ago and is the oldest bedrock in all of eastern Småland. Traces of the last ice age can be found in the form of beach embankments, shingle embankments. On both heights there are large stone squares that date from the time when the Baltic Sea stood much higher than now and the mountains rose like islets from the sea.
On a voyage of discovery
You can choose from several marked trails in the reserve. The reward for those who climb Örnberget or Fruberget is a breathtaking view of the sea and the archipelago. On Örnberget you can also see the Habor cliff and just south of Fruberget's highest point are the remains of an ancient castle.
Varied nature with rich flora
Pine forests grow on the reserve's two mountains and lush mixed forests with oak and lime trees on the slopes. Between the mountains are grazed pastures and meadows. There is a rich flora in both the forest and the old farmland. Fiddleheaded pea, water lily, sedge, maidenhair fern, cat's foot and the orchid Adam and Eve are just a few examples.
A rich bird life
Segersgärde's coastal, varied nature and archipelago offer a rich bird life. The intense song of the nightingale can be heard from the shoreline during the evenings and nights of early summer. The white-tailed eagle is now once again a common sight in these parts. Other species in the area include the eider, the woodcock, the rosefinch and the cuckoo.
Valuable old trees
There are several large oak trees in the pastures. The old trees are home to a number of different organisms. The rough bark is home to unusual lichens such as old oak lichen, short-shafted parasitic spike and pink lichen. The unusual leatherback beetle lives in hollows with mulch, a mixture of rodent remains, bird droppings and wood flour.
Visitor information and accessibility
The Segersgärdeleden trail is divided into two sections but together is about 5 km. One loop takes you from the parking lot at Värmvik through the pastures and up Fruberget and back down through the forest. The other part goes from the Örnberg parking lot up on Örnberget and Habors klint and back down again. None of these have high accessibility as it is very hilly and uneven surface. The trail is marked with orange in the terrain.
At Värmvik parking lot there is an accessible toilet and several picnic tables.
