Description
The Rågö nature reserve is one of the many gems of the Tjust archipelago. In the beautiful inner archipelago there are bays, inlets and a myriad of islets and skerries. Hike in deep pine forests, take a swim from velvety cliffs or visit Rågö's picturesque village with its classic archipelago houses!
Archipelago nature
The islands of the reserve are dominated by lean rocky areas with pine forests. Open land and shore meadows are bordered by deciduous forest with mainly oak and birch. Rågö and Kalvö are made up of Loftahammargranite. On Horsö there is also a more nutritious rock, gabbro, which means that the vegetation is more lush and species-rich on this island.
Flowers and butterflies
On Rågö's beach meadows, you can botanize among yellow combs, sea and marsh elder, bungee and wild linden. One of Horsö's characteristic species is the tulkört and in the oak forests on the northern part of the island grow yellow alder, cowslip, toothwort, woundwort and the endangered cross-leaved alder. Land that has historically been used for grazing or haymaking has a special flora with species such as bluebell, sedge, maidenhair fern, cat's foot and wild flax. On Rågö and Horsö, grazing animals ensure that the land remains open, which benefits the flora of the cultural land. Colorful butterflies flutter over the flower-rich fields on sunny summer days. One of the rarer ones is the large and beautiful Apollo butterfly. You can also see the silver butterfly, the moorland pearl butterfly and various species of mongrel swarmers in the flower-rich pastures.
Hikes
There are two marked trails on Rågö - the southern and northern Rågöslingan. The southern loop passes several bathing areas and takes you to a nice viewpoint via a smaller path. Don't miss visiting Rågö village, with well-preserved buildings from the late 19th century. During the summer months, the restaurant and hostel are open. In the village there is also an exhibition that tells more about life in the Tjust archipelago in the past and about boat builders and fishermen who lived and worked on Rågö.
