Description

This nature reserve protects an old beech forest. The forest is a small remnant of a larger contiguous beech forest area that once existed in this area. The oldest trees growing here already sprouted in the early 19th century. The old and dead trees of the forest are very valuable as they are home to fungi, insects and many others.

Beech trees of all ages

In this reserve, you will walk among beech trees of different ages. The young trees have silvery trunks with smooth bark. On older beech trees, the bark is slightly rough and covered with various lichens and mosses. Many of the trees in the reserve's forest are around 100-150 years old, some even up to 200 years.

Valuable trees

The old trees are valuable homes for everything from fungi, lichens and bugs to owls and bats. Even dead trees, both standing and lying, have a plethora of tenants. Species that rely on old trees and decaying wood are struggling today as their habitats become increasingly rare. But in this reserve they have a sanctuary!

Dark forest

What is the purpose of a beech leaf in life? Well, to collect the maximum amount of sunlight. The flat, horizontal beech leaves do this so efficiently that most of the sunlight never reaches the ground. So in summer, only herbs and grasses that can cope with scarce light conditions grow under the crowns of beech trees. And the occasional newly sprouted beech plant, of course.
